6.4.Cultivate Pearls (Bins) Discussion

Figured we would Kick of discussion About bins or "Cultivate Pearls".

We suggest the silhouette color be White, Yellow, Orange or Green. We have found these colors give the best visibility at the bottom of the pool.

We also are strongly opposed to a push button or lever action as are other teams we have discussed this with. Any sort of mechanical or hinged device is prone to failure, Failure of this mechanism during a competition run can have devastating effects on team's success through no fault of their own. Adding some push button device also makes it more difficult to simulate competition conditions. Finally as we and many other teams are significantly into our mechanical fabrication adding the mechanical infrastructure to operate this new as yet unspecified apparatus may be difficult or impossible. We would like to add that we are not supposed to ever adding a more complicated cover system, we suggest that if one is to be used in future it be brought to competition the year before so that teams may evaluate, and test the reliability over the course of a year to work out any inconsistencies.

Pearls

Thanks for starting up the discussion.

Green? I would suspect it would depend on the color of the "green" since some darker ones would probably blend into the black bin and/or the bottom of TRANSDEC.

I understand your concerns. My intention with the "mechanism" is for the entire sub to be able to manipulate it, so it _shouldn't_ be necessary to fabricate anything else/extra. It is also my hopes to be able to release a design soon for everyone to evaluate and comment on (however my real job is getting in the way). I will keep it as simple and cheap as possible. If "we" don't think it's viable, then I'll use the covers I've used in the past.

Your suggestion of bringing out something the year before is a good one (but then I have to think it up, design it and build it the year before as well!)

Thanks for voicing all of this!

We think this will differ

We think this will differ from team to team. We've gotten used to different manipulators for each year so long as it is feasible(considerations are: high points weightage vs time to completion of task) and that adds on to the fun anyway so we don't do the same thing always each year.

And we're not a fan of green either  Mixes up with algae transdec floor.

Anyhow, a lever sounds interesting. It might even be easier than the lid depending on how Dave designs the mechanism. Our issues with the lid are the drag forces from lifting the lid and it may block our DVL beams but still possible.

Lever / Bins

There's been some internal discussion about this and other tasks, so we'll see what actually happens.

Any Updates?

Hi, are there any updates on the color scheme of the bin and pearls? Additionally, are there official dimensions for the bins other than the 6" white border?

Bins

The Bins will be the same as last year, in both dimension and color scheme (due to time and lack of any better alternative).

The internal dimensions for the bin will be 12" x 24" (30cm x 60cm).  It will have a cover, just like last year, the flat portion will be orange, the handle will be purple.  I'll see if I can add some holes to the cover to reduce the drag force.

Hopefully, today I can finish the images that will be placed inside each bin and post 'em.

Thanks for asking!

Marker Inquiry

Hi all,

Is there any penalty for any markers that are dropped and cannot be recovered/too much trouble to be retrieved?

Markers

Nope.  Only that you may lose them.

"Markers will be cleared from the arena after each run. A reasonable amount of time will be spent looking for lost markers, however consider them expendable and have backups."

Can we clarify on the

Can we clarify on the dimension of the pearls of wisdom cut outs. Are they of the same dimension as the black cut out of 12" by 2ft in terms of scale, or would they be smaller?

Size of quote

I've scaled them up to fit just inside the 1ft x 2ft (30 x 60cm) area.  It is scaled uniformly so that there is a 1 to 1.5" (2.5 to 3.8cm) border on the top and bottom of the quote.  Hopefully that makes sense.

Sliding of Cover

Is there anything sticking out of the bottom of the cover or a lip on the top border of the bin that would make it necessary to lift up the cover as opposed to just pushing it off?

Under-cover

Thanks for the question.  I use 1/2" PVC pipe on the underside to make it slightly negative.  So you can't just slide the cover off, you'll have to lift it ~3/4" to 1" to clear the PVC underneath.
