Student Teams Converge on College Park, MD for the International SeaPerch Challenge

COLLEGE PARK, MARYLAND – RoboNation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering robotics education and workforce development will host the International SeaPerch Challenge at the University of Maryland, College Park on May 31 – June 1, 2024. More than 170 middle and high school student teams from across the globe will gather to showcase their underwater robotics prowess in this annual competition.

This year’s competition, sponsored by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute (OECI), focuses on the theme of deep-sea exploration with an emphasis on Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) navigating the challenging environment of hydrothermal vents.

Teams of students from 33  states and six  countries have dedicated countless hours over the past year to designing and constructing their ROVs, readying their ROVs to navigate through a series of rigorous tasks inspired by real-world deep-sea environments.

“In terms of education and workforce development, hands-on programs like the International SeaPerch Challenge are invaluable,” said Lindsey Groark, Vice President of Programs at RoboNation. “RoboNation is helping bridge the gap between the lessons students are learning in the classroom and the real world, positioning these students as ideal candidates to meet the demands of the global workforce.”

The International SeaPerch Challenge is an invitation-only event for teams who qualify through regional competitions hosted earlier in the year.  This event serves as the culminating gathering for the SeaPerch season and provides an opportunity for students from around the world to connect and learn from each other. The collaborative spirit and competitive drive of these young innovators promise an electrifying atmosphere throughout the event.

The International SeaPerch Challenge will be open to media on June 1, 2024 and will provide journalists the opportunity to witness the excitement firsthand. For further information or to request attendance, please contact Alicia Gavin at agavin@robonation.org.
