Engineering students from around the world compete in the 12th Annual RoboBoat Competition

• Reigning champions, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember from Surabaya, Indonesia, win first place
• 13 teams | 200 participants | 4 countries
• RoboBoat was held at Reed Canal Park, South Daytona, Florida, June 17 – 23, 2019

South Daytona, Florida, June 23, 2019 — Reigning champions from 2018 RoboBoat, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITSN) proved today that building on lessons learned and continuing to make improvements pays off. Since last year, the team focused on increasing the capability of their autonomous surface vessel (ASV) to perform the difficult tasks on this year’s RoboBoat course. Competing with four other teams in finals, ITSN received the most points on the course and combined with their documentation and presentation earlier this week, earned top honors.

The thirteen competing teams built robotic boats using just a set of rules and technical requirements and any tools and resources they could resource. These self-operating boats mimic tasks that are being developed for coastal surveillance, port security and other types of oceanographic operations. The competition teaches participants not just about the technology of robotics but also management, budgeting and operations skills.

Half of the teams competing were new to RoboBoat this year. Even returning schools like Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University had what sports teams call a “building year”, with mostly first year team members. Faculty advisors and support from their robotics club, the Robotics Association at EmbryRiddle (RAER), provided the young Embry-Riddle team with the mentorship and guidance needed to earn second place. Returning teams Universitas Indonesia and Hagerty High School took home third and fourth place respectively. Tecnológico de Monterrey from Mexico completed their third year with a first time qualifying for finals and fifth place overall.
