Robotics Team from Arizona Takes Top Honors at RoboSub 2024 Underwater Robotics Competition
IRVINE, CALIFORNIA — Si Se Puede Foundation, a robotics team from Arizona, emerged victorious at the 2024 RoboSub Competition. Of his team, mentor Dr. Daniel Frank said, “Young women from the Phoenix desert may not be the first group you would think of to build world champion underwater robots… Sometimes the best solutions come from the most unlikely sources, which is why it is so important we promote diverse thinking in engineering.”
Si Se Puede Foundation joined a talented cohort of 41 university and high-performing high school teams at this year’s competition. Over 500 students from 8 countries across 4 continents and 16 U.S. states competed to showcase their skills in autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) technology.
The top-performing teams of RoboSub 2024 included:
- Si Se Puede Foundation – Chandler, Arizona, USA
- The Ohio State University – Columbus, Ohio, USA
- Cornell University – Ithaca, New York, USA
- Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay – Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
- Advancing Science Technology and Art – San Diego, California, USA
- Carnegie Mellon University – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
- University of Alberta – Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

The 2024 competition was made possible through partnerships with the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific (NIWC Pacific); and with industry sponsors including SpaceX, MathWorks, Onshape, SOLIDWORKS, Blue Robotics, and more.
As autonomous and remotely operated underwater vehicles rise in prominence, the demand for skilled professionals in maritime technology continues to grow. These advancements are critical for underwater exploration, national security, environmental monitoring, and resource management, making expertise in this field an essential part of the modern workforce.
“I wanted to find a college that had an underwater robotics team, so I ended up at Ohio State! I’ve been on the team since 2020. [Early on], I was very involved in the mechanical team, junior year I was vice president, senior year I was president, and now it has led me to a career doing underwater sensors, in a defense company in Arlington, Virginia. I got a job from talking to people at RoboSub,” said Amber Dellaquca, a student from The Ohio State University.
The 28th RoboSub Competition will return to Irvine, California, in August 2025. RoboNation looks forward to continuing partnerships with the Irvine community, local leaders, government, and industry experts to help foster the future workforce.
