International Teams Converge in Irvine for Autonomous Underwater Robotics Challenge
IRVINE, CALOFORNIA – Over 500 students from across the globe will be testing out self-driving submarines in Irvine, California this week. RoboNation will be hosting the 2024 RoboSub Competition from August 5-11 at the Woollett Aquatics Center in Southern California. This year, the competition features 41 teams hailing from 8 countries across 4 continents and 16 states, showcasing emerging talent in the maritime technology field.
RoboSub is a robotics program where students design, build, and program autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to complete a series of tasks in a simulated real-world maritime environment. The program and annual competition foster creativity and practical engineering skills, challenging participants to solve real-world problems such as object detection, navigation, and manipulation.
The 2024 RoboSub Competition course is themed on deep sea exploration, with tasks modelling the important work uncrewed vehicles are doing in research of hydrothermal vents, marine life, temperature sensing, and more.
With the rise of autonomous and remotely operated underwater vehicles, there is an increasing demand for skilled professionals in maritime technology. These advancements are crucial for tasks such as underwater exploration, national security, environmental monitoring, and resource management, making it an essential part of our workforce.
“Workforce development is at the core of RoboNation’s mission. By participating in programs like RoboSub, students gain hands-on experience and critical skills that are essential for their future careers. Our goal is to bridge the gap between education and industry, preparing students to meet the demands of the rapidly evolving technology field,” said Daryl Davidson, President and CEO of RoboNation.
The 2024 RoboSub Competition is open to media throughout the week, but we encourage media to join us onsite on August 8, 2024 from 10:00AM to 2:00pm at the Woollett Aquatics Center. Please contact Alicia Gavin (agavin@robonation.org) to register your interest to visit the competition.
